Review of 'Clockwork' By Phillip Pullman
'Clockwork', or All Wound Up, as it is also known, is a clever and spooky tale with exciting twists and turns that you would never expect.
It all starts in a warm, cosy inn, with Putzi the cat curled up by the fire and Fritz, the storyteller, about to share a story. Now, Fritz is well known for his spooky stories, they're always bound to scare his audience, but even he did not know just how spooky this story was going to be! His characters were the evil Dr Kalmenius, the selfish Prince Otto, and the small innocent clockwork boy, Prince Florian. Fritz's audience were spooked from the beginning, but little did they know they too, along with the cold, heartless Sir Ironsoul, were all about to become characters in his tale!
'Clockwork' is quite a short story with a fast pace. There is an excellent balance of setting description and action. The characters talk or think aloud to themselves, which helps us to understand the plot and what each character is truly like on the inside. This keeps the story moving along quickly.
I really enjoyed this book. It is great to read by yourself (if you're brave) or to read aloud with someone else (much safer!). When I read it the first time it gave me chills down my spine. The characters in the story are really well done. The evil characters are really devilish, the good characters are very pure at heart. This book would be best suited for ages 9 and up, any younger and it is just too hard to understand the complicated, twisting plot.
The world would be a better place if there were more excellent stories like this! Definately a MUST READ!

HOW TO WRITE A BOOK REVIEW
A good book review gives an honest, personal opinion about a book. It is the reader's opinion, and others may disagree. The type of reveiw will differ, depending on whether your book is fiction or non-fiction.
A non-fiction review must summarise the content of the book.
A fiction book review must summarise the plot, without giving away the ending!
Your fiction book review must include the following-
* An interesting introduction that includes the name of the book and author.
* A paragraph that summarises what the story is about.
* A paragraph stating your opinion of the book, and who might enjoy this book.
Here are some prompts to help you:
~Who is the author and what is the title?
~Who are the main characters and what are they like?
~What is the story about?
~What pace is the book? Is it fast or slow? Does it have lots of action or lots of setting description?
~Did you enjoy the book? Why? Why not?
~What age/gender would enjoy this book?
~ How many stars, out of five, would you give it?
See the example below.
