My speech

Currently 121 prescription drugs are made from plant-derived sources. These medicines could help with future life threatening diseases.  Today the U.S.A national cancer society has found 3000 plants that are active against cancer cells.  So without plants or trees we won't be able to make future cures.

Every day 137 species die.  That equates to 50,000 species a year. That's a lot.

Did you know that 20%of the world's air comes from the Amazon Rainforest? So if we cut down the Amazon for farmland there will be lots of carbon dioxide in the air. That's bad for our body.

It's not nice to cut down trees. Imagine if you were a monkey far up in the canopy.  All of a sudden the tree shakes and some of your monkey friends fall from the tree. You hold on for dear life. The tree falls and you go with it. You went from a happy monkey to a helpless monkey. That's not nice is it.

In the rainforest there are over 3000 different kinds of fruit in the rainforest. Only 2,000 are eatable.

The Amazon rainforest covers 1 billion acres. That's the same size as Ireland. If it was considered a country it would be ninth largest in the world.

The life force of the Amazon comes from the mighty Amazon River. It starts as a trickle high in the Andes Mountains in South America. From there it flows to the 4,000 miles across South America and through the Amazon rainforest. Then it joins the Atlantic Ocean at a small town called Belem.

Deforestation must stop. And fast. I think trees are much better alive than cut down and burnt.

Cool Calendars

This week at school we have been focusing on our 2009 calenders. They rock! Our teacher had the best idea for the calenders. We made calenders with clothes lines on. This is how we made them.

  • First we tore a piece of a magizine and stuck it to our piece of paper.
  • Secondly we painted the rest of our picture.
  • Then we tied string around our art work.
  • Lastly we glued our clothes on our clothes lines.

Autobiography

                                                  Jack Feet

I was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1972.When I was 10 years old I moved to Christchurch, New Zealand with my mum and dad because we wanted a cleaner

Environment. When we arrived in New Zealand my dad was quickly entertained in the job as a doctor. This job also entertained me. I was always annoying him, trying to see how he did things. How could I help it, it was so fascinating!

At high school I was always the one running to get ice packs when people got hurt. I was always was the lonely one walking home. But not at home, I had the best mum ever. She was always playing a game called operation even though I always won. But my dad's skill was better than mine. He could complete the whole game with out it buzzing! At high school got a few certificates for nursing but no friends. I really wanted to play cricket but I was not good enough. At the age of 15 my mum and dad died in a car crash so I was sent to my auntie's house to live. A year later I went to university because I wanted to be a doctor. One of my life changing moments was when I got my job. When I started work I wasn't getting paid much but over the years my money was rising. When I was 18 I was one step away from being chief surgeon. I have had a few challenging moments like when my parents died, in fact it was very challenging because my dad was my hero. When he died I had no one to play with or joke with.

At this stage in life I am not married so I have no loved ones to miss.I also have a few that I do hope to achive. One of them is to get on  this newly discovered island of yours.
